Conservatory of Flowers: Free Admission Day

Whether you’re a native San Franciscan, a visitor from the other side of the world, or a classroom of budding botanists, the Conservatory of Flowers offers an intimate up-close experience with over 1,700 species of rare, exotic and endangered plants from more than 50 different countries.

Opened in 1879, the wood and glass greenhouse is the oldest existing conservatory of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.

• Normally $7, the Conservatory is free to all visitors on the first Tuesday of every month.
• Hours: 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Last entry is at 4:00 p.m).

Snowvember NightLife

Let it snow, let it snow…in San Francisco?! Celebrate the opening of ‘Tis the Season for Science, and get into the wintry spirit with indoor snow flurries, a pair of live reindeer, ice beetles, and spiked snow cones.

American Tripps hosts Berlin-style ping pong in a pseudo-snow globe, and GoGo Craft will show you how to make fingerless gloves.

In the planetarium, learn about winter constellations at 6:30, followed by two showings of Earthquake: Evidence of a Restless Planet. Music by ICEE HOT DJs: Shawn Reynaldo, Ghosts on Tape, Low Limit, and Rollie Fingers.

“The Catch” 30th Anniversary Celebration: For 2012, 49er Hall of Fame legend Joe Montana will be lighting the tree this year while also celebrating the 30th anniversary of ‘The Catch’ with former teammateDwight Clark.

Live Music: The event will include musical performance from Grammy winner Robin Thicke of ABC’s reality singing series “Duets,” and local legends the Dick Bright Orchestra.

Sugar Castle

Get in the holiday spirit by joining the Westin St Francis for the annual debut of one of the country’s largest sugar castles on November 21, 2012.

Executive Pastry Cheff Jean-François Houdré and his team have perfected this 12-foot rotating holiday sugar castle, which this year features the top “newsmakers” of 2012 so you can try to locate all the life-like elf replicas of politicians, celebrities, athletes and well-known personalities that are part of the cake’s decorations.

Snowflakes

Attend the 5th Annual Snowflakes on Market lighting ceremony on November 20, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in front of thecable car turn-around at Powell and Market streets.

Snowflakes on Market Street will feature the lighting of giant illuminated snowflakes on Market Street’s signature “Path of Gold” light poles from November 20 through mid January.
