California skies will be lit up with a meteor shower from the Orionid meteors this weekend. The show began this week and was seen all over the Bay Area. Some residents reported hearing a loud boom while viewing, while others thought the noise was an earthquake. The Orionds will peak across the U.S. as a waxing crescent moon sets before midnight on Saturday, October 20.
Here are some viewing tips:
- Get away from the city lights.
- Choose an area like the beach away from lights and with a wide open view of the skies.
- Look to the northwest. Get up high if possible.
- If you're taking pictures, make sure the exposures can last at least a minute if not longer and aim the camera at a 30-degree angle, rather than straight up, which is the worst thing to do.
